Two high school students were killed and two others were injured after a bus went sailing over a highway overpass in Houston on Tuesday morning, school officials said. The bus driver was also hurt in the crash.
The Houston Fire Department responded to the wreck just after 7 a.m. local time, Senior Captain Ruy Lozano told NBC News. The Houston Independent School District wrote on its blog that a female student died at the scene, and a second female student later died of her injuries.

The other two students aboard the bus and the driver were “seriously injured” and taken to local hospitals, the school said.
Houston police were at the scene trying to reconstruct the accident. According to witness reports, a motorist in a Buick LeSabre swerved into the bus, sending it careening into the guard rail and then over the overpass.
The Buick driver is being questioned by investigators. She has not been charged at this point, police said.
“Right now, the information that we are getting, she is telling police officers that she was driving eastbound, she believed a vehicle was drifting into her lane, so she veered to the right to avoid being struck,” Houston police spokesman Victor Senties told NBC News, adding that the crash was an active investigation.
According to the school, the bus was equipped with seat belts and security cameras. The driver has a clean driving record, and the bus, which was purchased new in 2008, had a maintenance inspection in June.
The students had been headed to Furr High School, which is also home to REACH Charter High School, school officials said.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy,” Houston Independent School District Superintendent Terry Grier said. “I ask all of the HISD community to join me in praying for all of those involved.”
