Nick’s Barbecue bills itself as the place for ribs — or “places,” as it operates five locations in Chicago’s southern suburbs — but on Friday night it also became a place for sudden wealth. The multistate Mega Millions lottery produced a single ticket matching all six numbers, and the Nick’s location in Palos Heights, Ill., vended it.
The payoff approached $400 million.
The drawn numbers were 23, 33, 53, 56 and 58. The Mega Ball number was 06.
The holder of the winning ticket, who had not been publicly identified, purchased the ticket as a “quick pick,” according to a Chicago Daily Southtown report. The restaurant is in line for a $500,000 bonus for having sold the ticket, the Southtown reported, putting the winning pot, which had been adding value since springtime, at $393 million.
The local CBS television affiliate, CBS 2 Chicago, called it the fifth biggest jackpot in the game’s history.
A frequent customer of the Palos Heights restaurant told Channel 2’s Lauren Victory that he and his wife — and other regulars, he added — were unaware Nick’s sold lottery tickets.
