BOWBELLS, N.D. (KFYRTV.com) – Authorities in Burke County arrested singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge in August for possession of marijuana while passing through the international border, court records indicate.
Etheridge, a 56-year-old resident of Hidden Hills, CA, was headed on her tour bus from Alberta to Minneapolis on Aug. 17 for a show, when officers stopped the bus at the Portal Port of Entry after a K-9 alerted officers.
Burke County Sheriff Jeremy Grohs said that a search of the bus revealed marijuana cigarettes dipped in hash oil.
Etheridge told investigators that all the items were hers, and that she used the items to treat a cancer diagnosis. She claimed she had received a medical marijuana recommendation in California.
Etheridge waived her initial appearance and is scheduled to appear in district court in Bowbells Nov. 14.
The B-misdemeanor charge carries with it a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail and $1,500 in fines.
