Iowa State released its preseason football depth chart Tuesday and the quarterback position remains an open one, with Grant Rohach, Sam B. Richardson and Joel Lanning all sharing the top spot at the onset of fall camp.
Coach Paul Rhoads said at the Big 12’s annual media day in Dallas he wants to have the starter determined at least two weeks before the Cyclones’ season opener against North Dakota State.
“August 16th is our second full scrimmage and by the end of that scrimmage if not before we’ll be able to name the starter,’’ Rhoads said. “… We’re excited about the competition. We don’t have a starter named, but we have two starting quarterbacks in our offensive system. There are a lot of coaches who would like to be able to say that.’’
Richardson started eight games last season for Iowa State, while Rohach was the Cyclones’ starter in the final four games a year ago.
