The girlfriend of a man who was shot and killed in a drug robbery gone wrong has pleaded guilty to her role in the crime.
21-year-old Faith Rasmussen of Sioux Falls was charged in March along with her mother and two others, for conspiracy to distribute more than 200 pounds of marijuana.
She originally pleaded not guilty, but has now entered a plea agreement.
Rasmussen sat in the courtroom shaking and rocking back and forth as she changed her plea to guilty, and more layers are slowly being revealed in this bizarre case.
The twisted story begins in December, when then 18-year-old Brian Anderson and Trevor Kruthoff of Watertown were coerced into stealing $100,000 in drug money from a Sioux Falls marijuana dealer, 20-year-old Jordan Lebeau.
The two were allegedly talked into committing the crime by two Dell Rapids men, Kevin Rice and Douglas Scholten, and they supplied them with a handgun.
On Dec. 2, Kruthoff and Anderson went to carry out their plan at Lebeau’s home in north Sioux Falls, but the crime went downhill when Lebeau and his father put up a fight, and Jordan was fatally shot.
Nine months after the murder, the woman at the center of it all admits she played a role in the crime. Rasmussen is pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, and one count of money laundering.
Rasmussen was dating Lebeau at the time he was shot, and had been supplying him with marijuana to sell. She had been receiving large shipments of the drug from out of state since 2012, and Lebeau was just one of several people she recruited to distribute it.
Rasmussen could face up to 40 years in federal prison for the drug charge, and 20 years for the money laundering. She must spend a minimum of five years in prison.
Her sentencing is set for Nov. 24.
Kevin Rice, Trevor Kruthoff, and Brian Anderson have all recently pleaded guilty to first degree manslaughter.
Rasmussen’s mother pleaded guilty to her role in the drug conspiracy.
